Calabasas Grammar School
Discovery Museum Field Trip
New World Villages believes that exposure to the world of science and technology, by visiting a world class museum in Silicon Valley, can and will inspire the students to look beyond their life of poverty into the possibilities the future may hold.
Calabasas Grammar School is attended by the children of migrant workers who work the fertile fields of the Salinas Valley in California. The school population is one of the poorest of any school district within California. The parents of the children have a difficult time meeting the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, much less school supplies.
Jan Moran, a teacher with Calabasas Grammar School, approached a New World Villages' board member, Sheila Couch, with the idea of what she knew would be an inspirational field trip for her students. New World Villages was asked to consider providing the transportation cost for the trip, which would entail renting a number of school buses.
The idea rang true with our mission statement, and we answered with a resounding "yes". The trip was attended by over 300 students and parents, and a great time was had by one and all.
