Chicken Run Project for the Village of Big Falls

In August of 2009, continuing its long history of working with the Animals for Others Program in the Toledo District of Belize, New World Villages took another step in our efforts to improve the lives of subsistent farmers in the area.  We financed the materials needed and provided the labor to build a large holding pen for chickens, to be used as part of a chicken run by the Animals for Others Program.

NWV, working with Dorla Bowman, Executive Director of Socio-Economic Outreach, as well as four volunteers from the village of Big Falls, built the chicken holding pen to be used to house chickens and chicks before their distribution to villagers. The goal of the project is to help establish chicken farmers and egg producers in the area, and to help these villagers earn income and provide protein for their families’ diets.

NWV once again had a great team of volunteers travel from the United States, at their own expense, to help with this project. The time, treasure, and talent of these volunteers are critical to the success of the ventures undertaken by NWV.

NWV gratefully thanks the following volunteers for help with the project:

Leah Smith, Portland, OR
Mary Maltby, Seattle, WA
Elaine Moran, Kirkland, WA
Don Page, Scottsdale, AZ
Kurt Petrauskus, Kenmore, WA  (board member)
Mal Moran, Kirkland, WA  (board member)

We would also like to thank our Belizean foreman “Busy” for once again leading the way!
