In September of 2010 New World Villages partnered with Serving Saints International to install a computer lab at Maude Williams School located in a very impoverished area of Belize City.
The children attending this school are among the poorest in the city, and both our organizations believe that the path out of poverty is through education. New World Villages received a generous donation of 10 new laptops from Hewlett Packard through our board member, Don Page. New World Villages approached Serving Saints International with a offer to donate the laptops and install the computer lab if Serving Saints International would match our 10 laptops.
The offer was accepted and we began working with the Principal of the School, Cruzita Castillo, and a local Belize City Councillor, Roger Espejo, to make this computer lab become a reality. A team of volunteers transported the laptops into the country and then worked for 2 days installing the computers and training the local teachers on the use and maintainence. Serving Saints International plans to use the real time video capabilities of these laptops to communicate with a Houston based school for intercultural communication.
The 300 students at Maude Williams School were present when the mayor of Belize City, Zenaida Moya, dedicated the lab. Mal Moran, the Executive Director of New World Villages, also addressed the students.
